Island Adventures

Madeira is a small archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa. It is known for its warm, subtropical climate and is comprised of a number of islands and islets, only two of which are inhabited. One of Madeira’s main attractions is its perse landscape, with the islands boasting amazing scenery of lush greenery and mountains, making them a popular place for walking trails.

Staying active is certainly not a problem during a holiday to Madeira; as well as hiking, or even canyoning, the waters around the islands are brilliant for a variety of water sports including surfing, scuba ping and fishing. You can even take a boat trip out to sea and go whale and dolphin watching. Or, for incredible views in every direction, visit Cabo Girão, a viewpoint on Madeiras highest sea cliffs.

Travel To Funchal

As well as stunning natural surroundings, Madeira has a lively side to it. Its capital, Funchal, is home to markets, restaurants and chic boutiques and bars. Waiting to be explored, the city is surrounded by hills and known for its picturesque harbour, gardens and the cobbled streets of its Old Town. Our 4 Star Madeira with Half Board Basis holiday allows guests to stay in a hotel situated on a sloping valley that offers a panoramic view of the mountains and sea, but is also not far from the city.

Your hotel provides a tranquil space to relax in, but there’s plenty to do when you venture into town. Start the day with a visit to Funchal’s botanical gardens where you can admire the many exotic plants or stroll around historic buildings like Funchal’s cathedral. Alternatively, there is a cable car which transports visitors from the city into the mountains. There is also plenty here to please any nightlife lover, with a variety of bars and clubs to suit everyone.

Explore A New Culture

In Madeira, you can immerse yourself in a rich culture of food, arts and crafts and music, as well as enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the islands and the treasures they hold. Be sure to shop for souvenirs to remember your getaway here; choose from traditional handcrafted lace tablecloths and linens with a unique embroidery style or intricate wicker baskets.

Vineyards dominate the hills here, and during your stay we recommend a wine tasting excursion to savour the islands' famous namesake wine. Plus, visitors should discover the vast amount of Madeiran cuisine on offer here, including Bolo do Caco, a kind of flatbread, plenty of meat and fish dishes and the traditional honey cake.

Unwind With Citrus Holidays

Madeira is home to many small, secluded beaches made from natural volcanic sand, but to really enjoy a beach holiday, try our All Inclusive 4 Star Madeira Holiday, where guests will stay on the southwest coast in the municipality of Calheta. The beach here is one of the islands’ few sandy beaches, and as it is sheltered by two sea walls the water is calm and current-free, perfect for a relaxing swim.

You’ll receive unlimited peace and quiet in this secluded resort, but there are plenty of exciting excursions available too, including a visit to the sugar cane factory to see how Madeiran rum is made. Alternatively, guests can venture into the hills and get to grips with the hiking trails, where walks take visitors past waterfalls, valleys and colourful plant life. Or, if you’ve hired a car, make the trip to the São Vicente volcanic caves and weave through the maze of pools and stalactites.
