With a history that dates back to the 1st century, Dambulla has historic statues and paintings in its caves that has made it a popular destination for archeological studies. This temple was built by King Walagambahu during the 1st Century B.C. Dambulla is a UNESCO world heritage site. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding and the paintings are done on the ceiling. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues 3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 statues of god and goddess.

Thereafter proceed on a jeep safari to visit the Minneriya National Park. The park is famous for being the best place in Sri Lanka to get close to free-ranging elephants. Bordering the Minneriya tank and the Giritale tank, the 7,529 hectare park attracts hundreds of elephants during the dry season, as surrounding water source dries up. Watching them travel in herds of 10 to 20, it is impossible not to be impressed with the sheer bulk of a fully grown adult, but equally spectacular is seeing how they interact. There is also a host of water birds, both large and small, so keep your eyes open for delicately hued storks, slender and elegant grey herons, and great white pelicans.

After breakfast you will leave for Kandy. Just 25 km from the hill capital of Kandy, the Matale spice gardens are among the best on the island. The name Kandy conjures visions of splendor and magnificence. Many of the legends, traditions and folklore are still lovingly kept alive. Drive around the Kandy Lake built by the last Sinhala King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1798. Visit the Kandy town and Bazaar, the arts & crafts centre and a gem museum and a lapidary.

In the evening visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic and thereafter witness a cultural show featuring traditional Sri Lankan dancing.

After breakfast, proceed to the Kandy Train Station to board the Train leaving for Nanu Oya – It is an unforgettable train ride to Nuwara Eliya. Sit back in the comfort where from you can catch jaw-dropping views as the train powers up through the tea plantations, into the clouds and then weaves in and out of the many mountain tunnels. The railway in Sri Lanka was first introduced by the British Colonial government in 1864, to transport tea from places like Nuwara Eliya to the capital, Colombo.

Nuwara Eliya which is at an elevation of 1890 meters above the sea level is the highest city in Sri Lanka and it lies beneath the tallest peak of the island. Nuwara Eliya (City of Lights) is a resort city blessed with salubrious climate, breathtaking views of valleys, meadows, mountains and greenery. Nuwara Eliya, also known as ‘Little’ England’, was the favorite hill station of the British who tried to create the resort into a typical English Village.

After breakfast, travel through the twisting roads of a tea plantation and factory where you will see the women, mainly of Tamil origin, at work in the plantations. Here you will see all the stages of the tea-making process and can also enjoy a cup of pure Celyon tea in the factory.

It is then onto the beautiful village of Kitulgala; with forest-covered hills plunging down to the wild waters of the Kelani Ganga, astounding waterfalls and towering trees, the scenery is particularly dramatic. Kitulgala’s original claim to fame is as the location for David Lean’s 1957 film “Bridge on the River Kwai”. Nowadays, Kitulgala is best known as the site of Sri Lanka’s best white water rafting with grade two and grade three rapids some 5km upriver from the village. After lunch we then head for the paradise beaches of Koggala.

En route we visit the town’s Turtle Hatchery. Koggala is one of Sri Lanka’s most import ant breeding spots for the endangered Sea Turtles.

The sandy beaches serve as sanctuary for several types of marine turtles including Loggerheads and the Leatherback Turtle. The small turtle hatchery first opened in 1996, in an effort to promote responsible tourism and conservation. The hatchery buys turtle eggs off fishermen, in an attempt to discourage them from poaching and selling the eggs.

You will be educated on the importance of protecting turtle life, via the hatchery’s facilities that care for new born turtles until they are ready to be released back into the ocean, an experience that you may even have the opportunity to do yourself first-hand! Continue to hotel.

A relatively unknown when it comes to beach escapes, Koggala is authentic, captivating and entirely without guile and location-wise it doesn’t get much better than this. The small coastal town stretches across the south coast of Sri Lanka and has one of the island nation’s longest beaches, where you can explore the reef straight from the beach.

A stay here takes your Sri Lanka adventure to an altogether different level, bringing together the exceptional and beautiful in one special paradise.

After breakfast, enjoy a relaxing day at leisure. Your beautiful hotel is set beside the sublime sands and coconut palms of Koggala Beach.Take a walk along the coast to look out for turtles wading in the shallows. Retire to the serenity of the spa for a soothing treatment or lounge beside the outdoor pool and be pampered. Nearby to the historic city of Galle, its famous fort is a site you will not once to miss and between November and April feel free to join a whale-watching excursion at nearby Mirissa.

End your holiday in this very beautiful and relaxing part of Sri Lanka by reclining on the golden sandy beaches or sipping cocktails overlooking the sunset.

If you keep your eyes open you might even see the Green Flash! A sudden short pinprick of green that happens as the sun sinks towards the horizon.

After breakfast, check out from the hotel. If there’s time discover the meaning behind Sri Lanka’s affectionate nick name “Ratna-Dweepa” which means Gem Island.
