Lying southwest of the Bay of Bengal and southeast of the Arabian Sea, you’ll find the island country of Sri Lanka, dubbed the “finest island of its size in the world” by Marco Polo. Think rolling landscapes interspersed with a heavenly shoreline which is tickled by turquoise-coloured waters, home to many different aquatic species.

Your first stop will be the small city of Habarana, gateway to the Habarana Jungle and hot spot for safari outings. Enjoy an elephant back ride, explore the hidden crevices of the Dambulla cave complex and then visit the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres high which boasts UNESCO World Heritage status.

Travel next to Anuradhapura, the capital city of the North Central Province and famous for its ancient ruins which have earned its place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. A heavy dose of history awaits you at the Bodhi Tree Temple, a complex containing the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world and vibrating with the chirp of monks and worshipers who swarm to the second most sacred place in all of Sri Lanka.

After goggling some of Anuradhapura’s stunning architectural centre-pieces, including the Brazen Palace and Ruwanweli Seya, prepare to be utterly spoiled as we whisk you off to yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site called Polonnaruwa. As the capital of the island between the 10th and 12th centuries A.D., Polonnaruwa has been declared the second most ancient of Sri Lanka’s kingdoms. What does this mean for you? Picture humungous man-made reservoirs, unspoiled monuments and time-worn temple complexes which radiate beneath the sun’s glow…

Next, you will visit the urban buzz of the city of Kandy, the last capital of the ancient kings’ era of Sri Lanka and replete with age-old places of worship and leafy-green tropical rain forest terrain. Arguably, Kandy’s must-see attraction is the Temple of the Tooth, home to a tooth relic of the Lord Buddha and therefore one of the holiest shrines of the island.

After stopping off at the tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya, make your way to the small backpacker-hub of Ella on the southern edge of Sri Lanka’s Hill Country. Here, you’ll enjoy excursions to the Horton Plains, Ruwana Waterfall and Yala National Park before venturing to a Turtle Conservation Project near Mirissa.

Mirissa is a thriving hub where beach-bumming and disco-dancing are par for the course. This small town on the south coast boasts an idyllic coastline and buzzing nightlife scene and also offers ample opportunity for whale and dolphin watching.

After a relaxing three nights’ stay in Mirissa, the last night of your tour will be spent in the sprawling city of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s financial and commercial capital. Boasting a vibrant atmosphere and bustling streets filled with a mixture of colonial buildings, ruins and modern shopping districts, Colombo attracts culture-vultures and history-buffs alike.
