Your journey of a lifetime begins in Bangalore. Arrive at the international airport where you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel. There is no better way to start your adventure than with an afternoon guided sightseeing walk around the city.
Once an obscure town, Bangalore is now the hub of India’s booming IT industry and is the nation’s most progressive city. The title “A Tale of Two Cities” is apt as Bangalore bridges together two different worlds. The central district, dating back to the British Raj years, contrasts with the Silicon Valley-esque outskirts of Bangalore. On this journey you will discover a mystifying land sprinkled with the unpredictable gems of India’s legacy.
At 16:00 hrs, visit the Bangalore Palace. It is one of the top attractions in Bangalore known for its elegant splendour and royal charm. You may take a walking tour of the palace and explore the architectural marvel which is a perfect blend of Tudor and Scottish Gothic with wooden interiors.
Travellers arriving Bangalore by afternoon flight will be taken to Bangalore palace on day 2 morning at 09:45 hrs.
OVERNIGHT IN BANGALORE
For the ultimate Indian indulgence we have arranged a day of stunning delights with the best of local wines. After breakfast and check-out, your wine tour commences with chauffeured transport in an air-conditioned car to a beautiful wine-producing vineyard situated in Channapatna,a city located 60km south-west of Bangalore. Here you will relish the strong floral and fruity notes of different varieties of wines. Your expert guide will ensure your tour flows effortlessly from start to finish, from pouring the finest wine into your ice-cool glass to surmising the age-old and modern processes of wine and cuisine.
Next, you will drive to the royal city of Mysore. Your stop along the way is equally spectacular with a visit to the fort town of Srirangapatnam. Located on an island straddling the Cauvery River, Srirangapatam is steeped in bloody history. The seat of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan’s power, this town was the de facto capital of much of southern India during the 18th century. The epic war waged by the British against Tipu Sultan in 1799 ended Srirangapatnam’s glory days. You can still sense the history as you view the massive ramparts, battlements and some of the remaining gates of the fort.
Drive on to Mysore and check-in to your hotel.
OVERNIGHT IN MYSORE
After breakfast, we arrive at Mysore Palace. Discover a royal heirloom in marble as you behold the sight of the sun striking its rays onto the domes that radiate like pink pearls. Entering the Doll’s Pavilion and Elephant Gate you will be transported back to a lavish way of life, where opulent halls are richly decorated with stained-glass ceilings and a golden elephant howdah that stands like an unused TARDIS to the ancient world of the Maharajas of Mysore.
Your afternoon exploration of the city of Palaces begins at the temple of Chamundeswari located on top of Chamundi Hills. The temple was named after a deity worshiped for centuries by Mysore Maharajas. Walk up the steps to behold the remarkable tower of the temple and its granite statues including the beautiful 16-foot statue of Nandi, gifted by the Maharaja, Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar in 1659. Just returned from a fantastic 2 week…
Just returned from a fantastic 2 week tour of southern India - Bangalore, Mysore, Ooty, Wyanad, Alleppy, Cochin, Trivandrum.
Citrus was the cheapest for the kind of trip we wanted so we were a bit concerned as to whether this would affect the quality but all accommodation was spot on - good quality 4/5* hotels on half board basis and great houseboat all to ourselves. All arrangements communicated well via London offices, our driver (Vishua) was brilliant - safe, courteous, and he had good english so was able to offer extra narrative and be our local fixer.
The citrus model (where there is a cohort of travellers but all traveling separately with their own drivers) meant you could gravitate towards other travellers if you wanted; we ended up pairing up with another couple most nights for cracking company.
Only issue was a last minute change to our return flight which meant a 7 hour layover in Dubai (but not Citrus' fault).
Will definitely return to Kerala and will travel with Citrus again - looking at Vietnam.
Great Citrus tour of southern India. 11 nights touring with a great driver Sree, then 7 nights at the Marari beach resort, returning 9th Dec. Last year we toured the Triangle and some other cities with another company, and both feel this Citrus holiday was a superior tour and better value for money. We has a guide only when needed - most times our excellent driver was all we needed. The whole tour was on a half board (buffet) basis, which was excellent, and we 'upgraded' ourselves occasionally to a la carte rather than buffet, All places visited were really interesting and both the staff and food at all locatiosn was great. The Marari Beach resort was first class, just what we needed, and we were treated like royalty simply because we stayed for 7 nights, which is apparently unusual! Only thing we would change if we go again is to get direct flights if at all possible. It was our choice to fly Emirates via Dubai, but I would avoid it if possible in future, direct flights save an awful lot of travelling time!!
Escorted tour of Southern India.
Just returned from a wonderful and memorable holiday in southern India. From start to finish both my wife and I could not fault the service by Citrus Holidays. We were met at the Bangalore airport by Abhilash who our guide was throughout. Abhi was courteous, considerate, humorous, informative and a pleasure to spend the two weeks with. The tour started in Bangalore and included visits to Mysore, Ooty, Wayanard, Kochi, Alleppey on a houseboat, finishing in Poovar. We experienced the diversity and culture of these areas on this tour. There are too many highlights to mention individually. If we were pushed it would be our driver/guide and the houseboat where we were the only two on the boat apart from the crew that stand out the most.
Being driven in India is an experience to behold, the traffic has an identity of its own, thankfully Abhi was very adept. His air-conditioned car and supplied water was a very welcome relief from the high temperatures we experienced. He is very knowledgeable about his country and the area he lives in. He also has many little tips about what to expect in hotels and about purchasing additional alcohol in those that do not provide it. Travelling between areas is sometimes lengthy but opportunities to stop and refresh with a drink, bathroom or cigarette break or plentiful.
Hotels do provide a small sample of westernised food but in the main the food provided is of a spicy nature, therefore those that are not happy with this it is worth bearing in mind when booking. Both my wife and I were happy to experiment with the food on offer and enjoyed it. No signs of "Deli belly" either. The hotels are well placed for the culture visits and sightseeing but the opportunities to shop as we like in the UK are limited. The hotels are comfortable and staff at these are very friendly and accommodating.
We are both pleased we undertook this escorted tour and gained knowledge of this wonderful area. It is not your typical holiday of sun and beaches but well worth undertaking. We will be recommending to friends and family that this is a holiday worth experiencing.
Citrus Southern India Explorer Tour
I have just returned from Citrus Holidays 13 night Southern India Explorer Tour. This was an excellent tour from start to finish and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The content and hotels were very good. Yes, on a couple of days there were some very long drives, but I don't think this could be avoided in order to pack so much into this holiday. However our whole experience was richly enhanced by our driver for the holiday. His name was Abhilash Johny. He was a sheer delight. Clean, prompt, courteous, kind and knowledgeable and each day he made us feel like very special people and nothing was ever too much trouble - I can't praise him enough. Well done Citrus
Independent travellers converted.
We usually travel independently, so having a trip organised for us in South India by Citrus Holidays was something of a novelty for us.
Overall it was a good trip and our driver Abhilash was excellent.
He was very flexible, safe and helpful. In some places, ie in Mysore and in Kochi, he hired for us extremely knowledgeable local guides. The gentleman in Mysore was particularly good. He had an excellent command of English, and was able to clearly and patiently explain the roles and relationships of the various gods in the Indian mythology, the difference in the local languages spoken, and loads of more. A real gem of a guide!
All the hotels were a very good quality. Should we look for any flaws, then perhaps we would have preferred our hotels in the big cities to be located closer to the 'heart beat' of the town, but we realise that might not be everyone's preference.
So, overall a very good experience and would recommend the trip, and Citrus Holidays.
Southern India Adventure
Well we’re almost at the end of our amazing Southern India adventure. The most incredible two weeks. The holiday of a lifetime. We have seen and experienced so much from Maharajah’s palaces in Bengaluru and Mysore, life on a hill tea plantation in Ooty, living up close with monkeys, elephants and other wildlife in a tree top house in the rainforest, exploring ancient Kochi where Vasco de Gama lived and died, overnight stay on a houseboat in Allepi, sailing through mangrove swamps where I was expecting Captain Jack Sparrow to leap out at any minute and finally to a Keralan beachside relax and look back in wonder. We have met so many friendly and welcoming people. We have been photographed by dozens of selfie fanatics who were under the illusion that we were celebrities (!) Thank you Kannan our fabulous private driver who made the whole trip so individual and special and thank you India. We love you.
Wonderful South India Tour
We have just returned from an amazing Southern India touring holiday. All the staff at Citrus have been really helpful from the initial booking right through to the end. Our driver, Sreejith especially so. Our initial flight was delayed so we missed our connecting flight but to our great relief Sreejith was waiting for us having kept an eye on all the flight changes.
Unfortunately I was ill on day 3 and unable to travel but again Citrus were very helpful. They changed the bookings so we could stay an extra night before moving on. Sreejith made himself available all day in case I needed further help. He was also very considerate of the pace we kept over the next few days trying to balance keeping as much as possible to the itinerary while making sure I could cope physically. Despite losing a day we still managed to do almost everything as originally planned.
I particularly appreciated Srejith’s willingness to stop along the way to allow me to take photos where no stop had been planned. As a result I have some wonderful pictures.
The standard of accommodation was excellent even where hotels had been changed. The overnight stay on a houseboat was particularly outstanding. The boat was a 6 berth but we had it and the 3 staff all to ourselves. The staff were very knowledgeable about the different birds and all the riverside activities we passed. They pointed things out all along the way. Talking to others on similar trips we seemed to have had a particularly friendly and knowledgeable crew. The standard of food on the boat was the best of the whole trip.
Would happily book another Citrus holiday.
I have just returned from the Southern India tour and I am still in a bit of a daze as it was so magical. I can’t believe all of the things that we did in those 15 days. Our driver Nishan was amazing - there were 4 of us in the car - he looked after us really well - nothing was too much trouble for him and he provided some really useful local knowledge on many occasions. The car was air conditioned and it provided a welcome haven whenever we returned from a palace, temple or gardens. We stayed in a rain forest for a few days which was amazing - saw elephants in the wild, birds snakes frogs and some amazing insects all with the help of a naturalist who provided the in- depth knowledge.
The hotel accommodation and food was of a high standard and none of us suffered any problems throughout the whole tour.
The overnight stay in the boat was a particular highlight - the food in particular was yummy.
Overall an amazing tour - unbelievable value for money and thoroughly recommended.
