"Of one thing there is no doubt: if Paris makes demands of the heart, then Munich makes demands of the stomach." Author: Rachel Johnson
Munich’s claim to worldwide fame may start with that ‘little beer festival’ in October, but it certainly does not end there. This is the Bavarian capital, where the local food is not for the dainty, non-carb, non-fat, quinoa eating folk out there, but for the folk that want to soak up all that glorious beer with lashings of meaty goodness like Schweinshaxe, (this dish is so hard it comes with its own knife still stuck in it), and soaking up the juicy goodness you have a dizzying array of carbolicious breads and dumplings that your stomach will thank you for, or not, a long time after the end of your break.
There are plenty of reasons to visit Munich; for the shopaholics, you have boutiques and big name brands, but enclosed in historic classical buildings and medieval city gates. If you are a party person then head to P1, after visiting all the bars. Munich is a major player in the arts, both fringe and mainstream, and whilst it is only the third largest city in Germany, it has the highest standard of living, placing 4th on a worldwide scale; impressive for a relatively small city.
Munich is also known for the best and original Christkindlmarkt, the traditional Christmas Market. This year it is between 25 November and 25 December 2016, a truly magical time to go where you can buy hot mugs of spiced cider or wine and just look at all the lovely stocking fillers, whilst listening to traditional Christmas songs.
