Historic Havana is your first stop on this jam-packed tour. Replete with Spanish colonial architecture, Cuba’s capital offers a sought-after blend of roaring nightlife, intriguing history and picturesque architecture.

Once a popular hangout for Ernest Hemingway during his travels, you’ll be whisked off on a guided tour of some of the sites he used to frequent, including hotels and bars which undoubtedly saw him pen some of his classics.

After spending a couple of days in Havana, you’ll venture to Viñales, a town in western Cuba and gateway to the Sierra de los Organos mountains and Viñales Valley.

Visit a cigar factory and take a boat ride through the waters of Indian caves in this lush, verdant area (a favourite among rock climbers) before returning to Havana where you’ll trace Hemingway's footsteps by classic car on Day 5.

Possibly the most memorable part of your trip will surface a week into your holiday when you watch a golden sunset bleed over the horizon at Chichen Itza. Up at 6am, you’ll spend the morning exploring this sensational complex of Mayan ruins, feasting your eyes on ancient structures such as the Temple of Kukulcan, the Great Ball Court and the Sacred Cenote.

And the history doesn’t stop there – we’ll then whisk you off to Izamal, a small city in the state of Yucatan which is home to a former Mayan pyramid, before venturing to Merida. The capital of Yucatan, Merida oozes colonial heritage from every orifice. Expect to see colonial-era churches, a fortress-like cathedral and relics from ancient Mayan temples.

To cap off a sensational getaway, you’ll spend the last leg of your trip in Cancun, a Mexican city on the Yucatan Peninsula fringed by the Caribbean Sea. Today you can spend the day however you please, however there is an optional Cuban bars tour available for £60pp (based on 2 sharing).

Within this tour, learn about the tradition of bar and winery-hopping. The first decades of the 20th century saw the golden age of Cuban cocktail making – at the same time the USA was experiencing the Prohibition.

New bars are being added to the long list of emblematic drinking establishments of the Cuban capital today. These fresh new faces on the scene offer a contemporary and well thought out interior design. The tour includes a class of Cuban cocktail making and a visit to the Rum Museum (Museo del Ron). Sample a wide range of Cuban cocktails and relive wonderful moments of the Cuban capital's history.

This wonderful tour will whisk you off to the places where the famous Ernest Hemingway used to live and frequent within Havana. These sites later were incorporated into some of his world famous stories. La Vigia Farmhouse was Hemingway’s former residence and will be the first place you visit on your tour.

Then, enjoy a walking tour through Cojimar, a fisherman’s village which was Hemingway’s source of inspiration for ‘The Old Man and the Sea’. Pay a visit to Room 511 at the Ambos Mundos Hotel which is where Hemingway used to stay in the 1930s during his trips to Cuba. Here, you’ll be served a cocktail before capping off your day with a visit to La Bodeguita del Medio and the Floridita bar/restaurants where he crafted the world famous mojito.

Take a transfer to the airport ready to board your flight to Cancun where, upon arrival, you’ll be taken to your hotel (the Hampton Inn Cancun) and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Kick-start today’s adventure with a visit to the biosphere reserve of Ria Lagartos on Yucatan Peninsulas northern coast. This is where you’ll find the largest flocks of pink flamingos in Mexico, as well as almost 400 other bird species. Enjoy a 2-hour boat trip through the estuary mangroves and keep your eyes peeled for flamingos, birds and crocodiles.

The trip includes a visit to feeding areas too, as well as a refreshing Mayan mud bath. Bathe in the mineral rich white mud and then dip in the salty lagoon waters to cool off and have a swim before lunch. Afterwards, you’ll make your way to the hotel in Chichen Itza where you’ll stay overnight with bed and breakfast.

Today you’ll be up bright and early at 6am, ready to witness the spectacular sunrise over Chichen Itza. Upon arrival at the site, take some time to appreciate the quiet atmosphere before the grounds are open to the general public. Feast your eyes on the scale and detail of the legendary Maya city of Chichen Itzahas. The geometric perfection of the 25-metre-tall Temple of Kukulkan (also known as El Castillo) was built as a representation of the mystical Maya calendar to reflect the optical illusion of a snake writhing up and down the pyramid during spring and autumn equinoxes.

Marvel at the Great Ball Court, the largest of 13 discovered at the site, the haunting Skull platform where human sacrifice took place, and the Sacred Cenote where the bodies were then dumped.

You’ll also find the Temple of the Warriors, the Ossuary, the Nunnery and adjacent church and the Small observatory – these are all very well preserved. Head back to the hotel for breakfast.

Afterwards, we’ll proceed to Izamal, a Mayan settlement known as ‘the city of the three cultures.’ It’s a magical destination which combines remnants of its pre-Hispanic past with the colonial period and the present day. Famed for its cultural and historical heritage, its Mayan name translates to ‘Heavenly Dew’. One of the best sites of Izamal is the Convent of St Anthony of Padua which stands on a former Mayan pyramid. Stop for lunch (not included) in Izamal.

Continuing to the ‘White City’ of Merida, Yucatan’s capital, you’ll embark on an eye-opening city tour of the historical downtown area, home to the wonderful Paseo de Montejo and its beautiful villas and 19th century palaces. Feast your eyes on the splendid Plaza Grande, home to a beautiful cathedral and Casa de los Montejos which was built in the 16th century and is now symbolic of the city. You’ll also have the chance to see the Government Palace and City Hall and there will be plenty of time to discover the city on your own too.

Have a hearty hotel breakfast followed by a morning of adventure at the ancient ruins of Uxmal. You’ll take a guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site rising above the jungle canopy and home to the 35-metre-tall Pyramid of the Magician, towering over the ornate Nunnery Quadrangle. Across the central plaza you’ll find the Governor’s Palace and its elaborately decorated roof. To the southern end you’ll find the Great Pyramid, standing tall and proud.

Afterwards, you’ll pay a visit to the Cacao Museum where you’ll learn about the importance of this plants to the Mayans, also having the chance to take part in a traditional Mayan ceremony. You’ll then return to Cancun or Riviera Maya for a 3-night stay at the Beachscape Kin Ha Villas with bed and breakfast. Prefer All inclusive? We can offer a stay at the Ocean Coral & Turquesa resort for a supplement- please ask your travel consultant for further details.

Today you can spend the day however you please! You might decide to visit the renowned Underwater Museum (a museum of sculptures beneath the surface which can be experienced by glass bottom boat) or Xcaret Park (a waterfront eco-archaeological park where you can snorkel and explore caves).

Today is your last day of leisure in Cancun, so feel free to spend it however you please. You might decide to do a bit of haggling at Mercado 28, a long-running flea market selling food, souvenirs and apparel or you might choose to hop over to Isla Contoy, a small uninhabited island not far from Cancun with secluded beaches and sea birds and turtles.
