Highlights of Brazil

From the twinkling metropolis of Rio de Janeiro to the thundering roar of Iguazu Falls, this 9-night tour will help you unearth the many treasures of Brazil. Spend an exciting 3 nights in Rio, visiting the mountains of Sugarloaf and Corcovado, before venturing to Foz do Iguaçu and then to the beachy paradise of Búzios for a sun-splashed 4 nights…

Overview
Kick-start your tour in Rio de Janeiro, inhaling the raw, windswept beauty of this twinkling seaside metropolis and its bountiful coastline. From the disheveled swarms of favelas (shanty towns) to the flamboyant carnivals and floats occurring yearly, this is a city full of contrasts and character – a real mix of cultures and communities.

Rio is full of glistening beaches, such as Copacabana and Ipanema, lined head-to-toe with sun loungers and renowned worldwide for their vibrant atmosphere and azure waters. The city is also home to the striking Christ the Redeemer statue sitting atop Mount Corcovado - a Brazilian icon plastered across postcards worldwide.

Corcovado itself is a 710-metre granite peak jutting out from Tijuca Forest. Nearby, you’ll find its ‘twin’, Sugarloaf Mountain, sitting at the mouth of Guanabara Bay and known for its cable way and superlative views of the city. During your 3-night stay here, you’ll be whisked off on an envy-inducing tour of both of these peaks.

Next you’ll venture from Rio to Foz do Iguaçu to visit the mighty Iguazu Falls – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Really, the Falls (which make up the largest waterfall system in the world and straddle both Brazil and Argentina) need no introduction.

During a guided tour you’ll experience the thundering roar of Iguazu from the Argentinian side, an area divided into the Upper and Lower Circuit and home to the Devil’s Throat, a narrow (and slightly terrifying) chasm about 70-80 metres deep. Bring waterproof clothing – you’ll certainly need it!

The last 4 nights of your trip will be spent in Armação dos Búzios (or simply Búzios), unwinding at this upscale seaside resort without a care in the world. And since there’s no set itinerary, you can explore sun-dappled Búzios at your own pace, whether that involves relaxing on serene Ferradura Beach or wandering along the cobbled Rua das Pedras in search of delicious Brazilian cuisine.

Day 1: CHOOSE AN OPTIONAL PRE TOUR AMAZON EXTENSION / ARRIVAL IN RIO DE JANEIRO (BREAKFAST INCLUDED)

Before you arrive Rio De Janeiro, you may choose this optional pre tour Amazon extension.

OPTIONAL 6-DAY PRE TOUR AMAZON EXTENSION:

Day 1: ARRIVAL IN MANAUS (BREAKFAST)

Upon arrival in Manaus, you’ll take a private transfer from the airport to your hotel (the Blue Tree Premium) where you can spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 2: FREE DAY (BREAKFAST)

Enjoy a hearty hotel breakfast before spending a relaxing day at leisure or venturing off on an optional city tour £75pp based.

Days 3-5: (BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER)

It’s an early start, enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then transfer to the Amazon Ecopark Lodge which will be your home for the next 3 nights.

The itinerary will include the activities listed below, the days which these are taken will be arranged locally by the lodge according to local conditions and are subject to change. You’ll be on full board basis while at the Amazon Eco lodge (from lunch on day 1 to breakfast on the day of departure).

Ecological hiking

The Ecopark is nestled in a forest brimming with many different plant species, streams of water and natural savannas. There are a number of natural trails that guests follow to discover the natural gems the jungle holds, such as exotic orchids and giant trees.

During such walks, bilingual guides are on hand to offer information on such as which fruit is safe to eat, how to navigate the thick forest and which plants have medicinal properties.

This tour takes place within the Ecopark property, usually right after breakfast. It can last between 1 and 3 hours depending on the fitness of the group.

‘Meeting of Waters’ phenomenon

You’ll leave the Ecopark at 8.30 am aboard a boat with 2 decks, head down the Negro River and feast your eyes upon stunning views of the city of Manaus, the Dome of the Teatro Amazonas, the Manaus Floating Harbor and other interesting aspects of local life (including houses on stilts!).

We’ll reach the ‘Meeting of Waters’ point at around 11.30am, when the dark waters of the Negro River merge with the brown waters of the Solimões River. The different waters flow in sync for around 12km and never mix – this is due to the difference in temperature, density and speed.

The boat trip proceeds down the Amazon River to Terra Nova island where we’ll stop for a delicious lunch at a local restaurant (buffet style with international and regional dishes). We may even catch a glimpse of the wonderful river dolphins!

We’ll return to the lodge at around 5:30 pm (approximately 9 hours)

Optional tour to Lake Janauri for fishing (booked and paid for locally)

Leave the lodge by paddle canoe or motorized canoe. A bilingual guide will accompany you on your fishing excursion for piranhas and other species. This is an amateur fishing experience. The material used includes simple wands, lines and hooks.

Monkey Forest

The ‘Monkey Forest’ is the centre for rehabilitation and reintroduction of wild animals. Created in 1991, it houses animals confiscated from illegal trade.

You can visit the site accompanied by a guide and it offers a great opportunity for tourists to film and photograph these wild animals in a completely safe and natural environment.

Nocturnal Spotting

You’ll set off in paddle canoes or motorized canoes with a bilingual guide. The aim of this brilliant tour is to witness the extraordinary sounds of the jungle at night and spot alligators and other nocturnal species. You’ll find that alligators’ eyes glow like small red lights under flashlight, making them somewhat easier to spot.

The tour will last approximately an hour. The varying water levels sometimes make it difficult to spot alligators, particularly from April to August. (appriximately 1 hour)

Visit to Native Community

You’ll depart from the lodge by boat with a bilingual guide. The aim of this tour is to learn about the behaviour of the ‘ribeirinhos’ – the native inhabitants of the river communities.

This tour will last between 1 and 3 hours, dependent on the places visited which is determined by water levels. During times of drought, you’ll stay closer to the lodge, whereas distant communities are more likely to be visited when the water level is higher.

Day 6: DEPART FOR RIO (BREAKFAST)

Take a transfer to Manaus Airport for your flight to Rio. Upon arrival, you’ll be escorted to the hotel to continue with the main tour.

Welcome to the glittering metropolis of Rio! You’ll be escorted to the Windsor Hotel with a guide where you’ll stay for two nights in a standard room with a delicious daily breakfast.

There are a plethora of trails and paths on the Argentinian side, and this area is accessible from the town of Puerto Iguazu. You can trek along the Lower and Upper Circuits; the Lower Circuit is a 2km walk with 8 designated lookout points along the way, while the Upper Circuit is home to the spectacular Devil’s Throat – a 1km walkway that takes you right to the top of the thundering Falls.
